Sep 14, 9 AM ~ Center of the Universe Hike

This 4 mile urban hike will take us through the quaint Town of Ashland, also known as “The Center of the Universe”. We will meet in the Henry Clay Shopping Center, located at 412 England Street, at 9:00 AM.
From there we will walk past the renovated Ashland Theater, a wonderful
example of Art Deco architecture. We’ll then walk north through the
beautiful campus of Randolph Macon College. At the end of the campus
we’ll walk over to North Center Street and walk south back into the center of town. We’ll be walking parallel to the railroad tracks so prepared to see a few trains rolling through town. As we approach the main intersection we’ll see the train station, the imposing Henry Clay Inn, and the newest addition, the statue of Secretariat.
Continuing south on Center Street we’ll view many Victorian homes that were built during the railroad boom. From here we’ll leave the sidewalks and take a short walk through the Carter Park Trail. Leaving the trail we’ll head north and complete this hike through Ashland.

  What to bring
• Water bottle, clothing appropriate for the season, aspirin, practical footwear, cap or bonnet, pepper spray, band aids, insect repellant, sunblock, maybe a dry garment for after hike activities.
