History of Photography - The First two Hundred Years with Eddie Robinson

Details

Join us for a captivating history of photography as we approach the 200th anniversary of the first photograph created in 1826. The presentation will include:
1. 18th century and earlier - before photography
2. 19th century - development of the recording medium, from wet plate to roll film
3. 20th century - development of the recording device, from large format to DSLR cameras.
4. 21st century - the digital and software revolution, from Photoshop to generative AI
From Ed
It will cover how photographic technology has changed; show many of the iconic images taken with that technology (including over 30 of The 100 Most Influential Images - as defined by Time Magazine; meet (albeit briefly) some of the greatest photographers ever (roughly 20 of The 50 Most Influential Photographers - per Icons Of Culture) have work included; and look at the history of selected photographic publications that have had a lasting influence on its evolution.

During the presentation we will cover how photography became accepted as an artform in its own right -discrete from painting; how it changed from being limited to professional and advanced amateurs to the mass consumer activity that exists today; and close with the question (recently posed in a major New York Times article) and highly relevant in our 21st century digital era - "What Is Photography".

I hope you are able to come along and if so enjoy it - I have certainly discovered much in its preparation, and had fun pulling it together. Eddie"

*You'll get a lot more out of it if you join us in person, but we will offer a zoom option so you don't have to miss out completely if you can't :)
