Evening hike at White Sands

Afternoon potluck and a 4.6 mile hike at White Sands National Monument. This time of year it's difficult to find a trail that's cool enough to deal with so Saturday afternoon enjoy the afternoon heat and a cool evening hike by moonlight. The full moon is on the 5th but the moon rise on the following Saturday isn't until 9ish. Moon set on the 1st is 5:15 so the moon will be up when the sun sets around 8:00, should be nice. This was a fun hike last year despite the overcast conditions, and the eats were fantastic. If you haven't done the Alkali Flat Trail at night you're in for a treat. If you have, you should know, bring a flashlight just in case. The drive is about 1 hour so we should be at the park entrance by 5:00. There is a $3/person park entrance fee.

I've never hiked in the late afternoon/evening, and the experience was terrific. The potluck dinner was delicious, and the hike in the dunes as night fell was surreal and wonderful. My only regret is that I noticed that Cattleman's was closed and the post hike drink was probably forfeited. I'm looking forward to hiking more with this great group of people! Thanks everyone!

I had a great time last night. The food was great as well as the company. Thanks for all the hard work in organizing the trip Tom. The chicken was great!

Great food and the hike was unique. Would have been helpful if the National Park Service did at least minimal maintenance on the trail by ensuring markers were well visible. Looking for them in partial moonlight was problematic at times, especially when they only poked up 4 inches above the sand or were totally MIA. Great time nonetheless.
