Afternoon potluck and a 4.6 mile hike at White Sands National Monument. This time of year it's difficult to find a trail that's cool enough to deal with so Saturday afternoon enjoy the afternoon heat and a cool evening hike by moonlight. The full moon is on the 5th but the moon rise on the following Saturday isn't until 9ish. Moon set on the 1st is 5:15 so the moon will be up when the sun sets around 8:00, should be nice.
This was a fun hike last year despite the overcast conditions, and the eats were fantastic. If you haven't done the Alkali Flat Trail at night you're in for a treat. If you have, you should know, bring a flashlight just in case.
The drive is about 1 hour so we should be at the park entrance by 5:00.
There is a $3/person park entrance fee.
