Urban hike: Sonoma Ranch Boulevard

There will be two start points: Full distance is approximately 15 miles round trip start at 7:30 a.m. at Pic Quik on the corner of Sonoma Ranch Blvd and Bataan Memorial Hwy. For approximately 10 miles round trip start promptly 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Golf Course Road and Sonoma Ranch Blvd. The people doing 15 miles will join the people doing 10 miles at the SW corner of Golf Course Road and Sonoma Ranch Blvd so be prompt because if we don’t see you we will keep walking. Once we reach the pavilion at ‘A’ Mountain we will take a brief break before starting up the mountain. After descending the mountain, we will take a snack break and head back on Sonoma Ranch Blvd.

This is a beginner/intermediate hike. For the most part the walk is paved and flat but you can go as far as you want. You can turn around at any point. If you are a beginner hiker know your limit. You can always do this hike again when it’s offered and go further. Build your ability and stamina slowly each time you do it. For the intermediate hikers this is a chance to get in a good amount of miles on an easy route.

Even though we will take a gentle route up and down ‘A’ Mountain wear the appropriate footwear for which ever portion of this hike you are doing. Use sunscreen and wear a hat since there is no cover or shade on this hike. Bring plenty of water and snacks.

Return time for the 15 milers approximately 2:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. for the 10 milers.

We had good weather. The temperature was just right. We experienced some wind on top of 'A' mountain and near the end of the hike. We finished at 12:30 pm well before the heavy gusty winds started. Robert, thanks for participating and recording the correct mileage for this hike - 13.6 miles. I hope your feet aren't sorry tomorrow. I'm glad Manos joined us for the 'A' mountain portion. Hope to see more of you on future hikes.

I did this hike last month and really enjoyed it. Even though it is an "urban" hike, it is on the edge of town, giving you an open feeling along the edge of the desert with a nice open view of the Organ Mountains the whole way. Add to that a short climb up our own urban "A" Mountain and you will feel like you've had a nice challenge with a touch of nature.

Those of you wanting to do the shorter 10 mile hike and meet us at the corner of Sonoma Ranch blvd and Golf Club road can park at the clubhouse parking lot, which is about two and a half blocks west on Golf Club rd. Just be sure to be waiting at the corner of Sonoma Ranch and Golf Club no later than 8:30 to join us as we walk by.
