What: Organ Needle using the western wall, or Retaining Wall Route. Accessed from Dark Canyon, and it is a somewhat exposed 3rd class route. Have trouble with the regular route? You'll hate this one. Not for beginners. However, the rock won't be smoothed down from years of excessive use, and being a ridge, it will have abundant holds not a smooth ledge to climb on. Descend the normal walk up route.
When: Possibly May 18. Date may change. the 16th or 17th would actually be better for me.
Unless someone has a pass, I plan to hike the long way from the Jeep trail off Baylor Pass RD, so meet at the Baylor Pass TH, and proceed south from there. Meet around 9 AM.
A brief description, taken from a climbing guide: This high, narrow, curving wall, forming the western and southern sides of Dark Canyon, can be climbed most easily from a point in Dark Canyon near the beginning of the SW Wall climb (Route 1b (http://web.nmsu.edu/%7Eamato/ingrahamguide/Needle/Needle.html#Rt1b)). Once upon its narrow spine, you can traverse it for a certain distance in either direction.
T0 access 1b, which you will need to get to the base of, to access this route:
In Dark Canyon, several hundred yards short of the saddle, there is a concave bay in the southwest wall of the Needle's summit tower. Start toward the left aide of the bay and traverse diagonally upward over steep and somewhat loose rock to a spacious ledge. Go up an easier pitch at .......
This will be entirely 3rd class, not 5th.
