Quite possibly, this is either the best or worse idea we’ve ever had! We’ve been trying to get this going since last year, and with the recent entry into DST we can finally start: HIKE & HAPPY HOUR!
A change of pace this week: we'll be trying to see whether doing Picacho Mountain is viable. On Las Cruces West Mesa, Picacho Mountain is nearly the same height as Tortugas Mountain, but has more prominence when looking across the valley. We've never tried to do this mountain during an evening, so it's very likely we'll be stuck out after dark. Please bring a flashlight!
Las Cruces has plenty of local-ish microbreweries (De La Vegas’s, Mimbres Valley Tap Room, High Desert) and vinters (St. Claire’s, Luna Rossa’s, etc) we could visit on a rotating, weekly basis, each with a wide selection of libations.
DISTANCE is variable depending on what we decide to do. Please plan between 2 and 6 mi.
ELEVATION GAIN is variable, but it is some 1000 ft to the top of Picacho Mountain.
FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!
DURATION: variable; we finish when we finish. I aim for getting done by 8:30 pm or earlier.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.
SKILL LEVEL is variable. If you're a beginner, please come and let us know—we'll pick an easier route!
TERRAIN is loose, steep mountainside. I personally stay on trails but we may go off if people desire something more challenging.
WEATHER is clear, though sometimes it's windy on the top.
AFTERWARDS is TBA; we usually decide during the hike.
Las Cruces: 5:45 pm at the US Fairaces Post Office. See map:[masked]°N,[masked]°W (https://www.meetup.com/las-cruces-hiking/events/geo:32.307925,-106.83717) (see on Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/?q=32.307925,-106.83717&z=18), OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=32.307925&mlon=-106.83717&zoom=18), USGS topo map (http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=32.307925,-106.83717&marker0=32.307925,-106.83717&z=18)).
