El Paso Westside ridge walking & hike; Las Cruces Tour de Beer

Cross-post w/ Carol and the El Paso Hiking Meetup/Ridgewalkers (https://www.meetup.com/El-Paso-Hiking/events/130293222/). Description from Carol:

What: An early morning hike on the west side of the Franklins. We will hike a canyon up to the ridge, north along the ridge a ways, and back down another trail and back to the cars. No Fees.

When: Saturday July 27, 2013

Meeting time: 6:20 AM

Hiking start time: 6:30 AM

Meeting place: On Thunderbird Road where the large water tanks are. From I-10 take the Sunland Park exit, after you cross Mesa it becomes Westwind, the 3rd or 4th stoplight will be Thunderbird, turn right and drive toward the mountains. Watch to the right for the water tanks and to the left for the golf course. Park along the road.

Hiking distance: 4-5 miles

Time length of hike: 3-4 hours. Since we are hiking on the west side, we should have shade most of the morning.

Type: on trail

Difficulty: moderate

Bring: 4-5 liters of water, snacks, sturdy hiking boots

I plan to finish by 12–1 pm, after which, I'll be heading directly back to Las Cruces for their second annual Tour de Beer (http://www.lascrucestourdebeer.com/) (a good hike makes a beer that much more enjoyable). At 2 pm is a session "I Know How to Drink Beer… But How Do I Taste It?" that I will not be missing. I did not go last year but was told it was great!

See their Website for ticket availability. The cheapest tickets can be bought in advance (up till Friday) for $12 (cash only!) from the Las Cruces Taproom, next to the Starbucks on University and Espina in Las Cruces.

DISTANCE is See above.

ELEVATION GAIN is Somewhere between 1000–2000 ft, depending on what part of the ridge we climb to.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by lunch/early afternoon.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.

SKILL LEVEL is *NOT* beginner friendly. No whiners!

TERRAIN low-desert fauna and terrain: gravel, prickly brush, and sharp, pointy rocks.

AFTERWARDS I'm going to the Tour de Beer in Las Cruces; see above.
