Rabbit Ears Massif

We will take the most common route. From Baylor Canyon Road, we will take the entrance of the jeep road headed for the hut and park right at the entrance. We will pass the mine site, cross over Northeast to the entrance of the Rabbit Ears Canyon. Take the canyon all the way up to the saddle between South Rabbit Ear and Rabbit Ears Massif. We will summit Rabbit Ears Massif.

The Rabbit Ears Canyon is one of the most beautiful canyons in the Organs, straight shot up rock cliffs, jagged and threatening, with variety of rock formations and hues of color resulting from different mineral components. Huge sections of the arroyo bed are simple granite rock, solid and clean, an ideal terrain for canyon lovers.

Last time we were in the Rabbit Ears Canyon, there was plenty of water running. With recent rains, there should be plenty of wildflowers and laughing waterfalls.

This hike involves plenty of bouldering, small waterfall climbing and bedrock scrambling. It demands agility, full body strength, and mental focus. To some hikers who like canyoneering, this could be a much enjoyable, fun outing, much easier a hike than some other Organ hikes, like the Peak or the Needle. However, to some others who are not comfortable with steep canyon ascending and descending, might find it unusually difficult an adventure. It is for the hiker to find it out.

The climbing from the saddle to the summit is especially steep, but short.

Please bring at least 5 liters of drinking water.

Meet us at 7:30 at Kmart or 8:00am at trail head.

It took us just a bit more than 6 hours. Nice pace. I am glad we all kept up with Clayton (well, he occasionally stopped to check how far behind the rest of the group were, and then catch a breath himself. Grin.). Boy, it was a challenge to me, especially on the way down. They made me feel my legs are getting old.

Fabulous hike! The bouldering was so much fun and scenery was gorgeous, of course. Fellow hikers very knowledgable re: terrain and various other trails/ hikes in the Organs. Thank you Yubao!

Thanks:). There are several reasons I like the Organ hikes so much. First, they pose a bit challenge, at least some of them. Second, they are right there, 20 minutes drive away on average. And third, they are real beautiful hikes. Hope more Las Cruces hikers will join us in the future hiking the Organs.

Where exactly is the trailhead? Is it near Dripping Springs?

it's hard to describe and very easy to miss. It's actually closer to Baylor Pass parking lot than Dripping Springs. There's a sort of gate.

I plan to be at the trail head but don't wait for me. If I'm late I will catch up.

If anybody can play catch up, it's you, Clayton:). See you on the trail.

Is this hike up to the Massif, or NRE? Either way, Rabbit Ears Canyon is a beautiful approach for whatever one decides to do once up there. Have fun, Yubao; don't forget your sweet peppers. :)
