Evening hike at White Sands

Afternoon potluck and a 4.6 mile hike at White Sands National Monument. This year's looking like it's going to be a schorcher so Saturday afternoon enjoy the afternoon heat and a cool evening hike by moonlight. The full moon is on Saturday 26th and the monument will be open until 11:00. Sunset it 8:15 and the moon rises at 8:40. This is a fun hike and the food's great. If you haven't done the Alkali Flat Trail at night you're in for a treat. If you have, you should know, bring a flashlight just in case. The drive is about 1 hour so we should be at the park entrance by 6:00. There is a $3/person park entrance fee.

This is my first hike in forever and a day! 4.6 miles does not sound like a lot for a hike, but I just want to confirm that it isn't. We are slightly out of shape, but healthy. Also I have a clue about the basics for what to bring (water, hat, bandana, bandaids, insect repellant). Anything else? As far as the potluck, I am not sure if this is for before, during or after the hike.

Tom and I have talked about the best way to handle the ongoing list of things that everyone is bring to the Pot Luck. He said that he was going to be out of town and busy most of the week, so if you will email me what you are going to bring and I will try to to keep up with the list and email it back out. I'm bring plates, cups, napkins & utensils. [masked]
