Hike & Happy Hour: Picacho Mountain

Quite possibly, this is either the best or worse idea we’ve ever had! We’ve been trying to get this going since last year, and with the recent entry into DST we can finally start: HIKE & HAPPY HOUR!

On Las Cruces West Mesa, Picacho Mountain is nearly the same height as Tortugas Mountain, but has more prominence when looking across the valley. We don't have much experience doing this mountain in the evening and may get stuck out after dark, so please bring a flashlight!

Las Cruces has plenty of local-ish microbreweries (De La Vegas’s, Mimbres Valley Tap Room, High Desert) and vinters (St. Claire’s, Luna Rossa’s, etc) we could visit on a rotating, weekly basis, each with a wide selection of libations.

DISTANCE is variable depending on what we decide to do. Please plan between 2 and 6 mi.

ELEVATION GAIN is variable, but it is some 1000 ft to the top of Picacho Mountain.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: variable; we finish when we finish. I aim for getting done by 8:30 pm or earlier.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.

SKILL LEVEL is variable. If you're a beginner, please come and let us know—we'll pick an easier route!

TERRAIN is loose, steep mountainside. I personally stay on trails but we may go off if people desire something more challenging.

WEATHER is clear, though sometimes it's windy on the top.

AFTERWARDS is TBA; we usually decide during the hike.

MEET at:

• Las Cruces: 5:45 pm at the US Fairaces Post Office. See map: [masked]°N,[masked]°W (see on Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, USGS topo map). We will carpool from here so please do not be late!

Terrific! I had a great time. I am a beginner, and did ok - lots of range in hikers and in the hike. Nachos and beer with everyone after the hike was great finish.

Sadly, I'm still sh*tty sick and will be sitting this one out as well. Bummer. Next week will be peak week fitness for me! Yoga + Hikes + homebase-cross-fit.

I'm so glad you're planning one on an evening I'm in town for business! I'll look forward to the hike and libations afterward. I won't have my dog along for this trip, but look forward to seeing everyone.

Glad you're back in town! In the future, if you're unable to make Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday/Sunday, let me know in advance and I'd love to schedule something on another day for you.

It's getting dark quickly—we're getting on the last few times we'll be able do this on Thursday this year. Please note we are meeting at *5:45 pm*. I'd like to go a bit more off-trail exploring the west side of the mountain for this week.
