Ice Canyon - Big Baldy - Little Ice Canyon

This hike is about 6 to 7 miles total distance, with about 3000 feet of climbing, and it takes about 8 hours.

This hike combines three hikes together, Big Ice, Little Ice, and Big Baldy. Any one of these three hikes is challenging enough, the combination definitely will not make it easier.

On May 4 this past spring, 12 hikers did Big Ice Canyon - Ridge - Little Ice Canyon, and it was quite a successful adventure.

On September 28, I revisited both Canyons with another hiker, and found out that with water running, it's just more interesting and more adventurous.

It is with a lot of exposed steep climbing, both in bedrock canyons, and loose scree heading toward the ridge. Comes to climbing and scrambling, it is right up there with the Organ Needle hike. The hike is amazingly beautiful, still, the effort and skills involved should make hikers take pause and rethink.

Hi All. I will hike to Baldy on October, 1st. I may bring some folks from Albuquerque as well. Does anyone have gps tracks for this hike? They would help me tremendously. Thanks in advance.

I work that weekend, which was why I went with the 23rd and 24th, as I am off. I can either just try this hike, or perhaps someone else who has done this can lead. Is it all that complicated that a leader is necessary?

Well, perhaps this can happen in December. Baldy isn't going anywhere.

Obviously we missed the beer part. But the hike was great. It was so nice to welcome Jim Dryden into our actions. And he's such a strong hiker. Robert was just being good old Robert, strong, steady, and very reliable. And as always, he read the top map with the precision of a dentist. The Invincible Carol just kept upping her game. Seeing her on the trail made me wonder, if I didn't keep on making progress, she's going to beat me on the trail sooner or later. Having the other young and beautiful lady on the hike made the hike way easier for us all. Not to mention the red tunas, kiwis, pomegranate, chocolate, and the sugary bun she brought us!

Not feeling well, might change my mind tomorrow and I'll call if I do. Maybe go later in the month?

Well with that description I'm rethinking...no

OK. My bad. And I am sure, each and every one wants to make for beer though.

Yubao, I only chose that day as the new schedule was not out yet. It should, should be out tomorrow. If I am off Sunday, I have no problem making the hike that day at 8, but if I have to work I can't do Sunday. For now, 8 am at the Dripping Spring is fine.

Any chance we can move this to Sunday? Dia de La Cerveza is 12–4 pm (there's zero chance we make it back by noon, hah) http://holdmyticket.com/event/152997

Why don't we meet at 7 or 7:30am instead so that we can ensure time for Beer Fest? I think that's fair, no?

      It's 7:30 am now.

Beth: have you ever done Organ Peak? That's an EXCELLENT hike. I've been on top of numerous peaks in the Organs, and that one is arguably my favorite.

Beth has been on both hikes.

I'm seriously tempted... but that Dia de La Cerveza looks good too... what to do what to do... ^^

Distance-wise, this is a short hike. Though I posted as 6-7 miles, my personal guesstimation is somewhere around 5 miles. It's very reasonable that if we push the pace just a bit, we can get it done in about 5-6 hours. That means... BEER!

      October 23, 2013

    • Ryan C.

YEAH, I really really do not want to miss the beer fest.

Unsure of 100% availability, but Saturday the 2nd might work. I will know when the new schedule comes out.
