As part of my fall hiking program, I am planning on doing sections of the Rim Trail, in the Sacramento Mts. I will break it into sections, and my first planned section runs from Cloudcroft to the paved road up Alamo Canyon. Appears that one other road, Carr Canyon, is paved and crossed just before the turn around point.
Stats, based on a GPS route, show that this segment, round trip, will be nearly 23 1/2 miles, with 3,150' of accumulated elevation gain, due to the rolling terrain. I had originally planned on Dog Canyon to Sunspot on this day, but a forecast for wind is making me reconsider. I expect cool, but windy conditions. If it gets too bad, I may return to that plan, as it is warmer down lower. That depends on interest.
Plan on 10 hours or more of sustained fast paced hiking. Not beginner friendly, but I am fine with dogs. Pack food and water (3 + liters) and clothes accordingly.
We can meet at Walmart, or up in Cloudcroft. Meet at 8 in Alamo, about 830 in CC.
