Dog Canyon to Sunspot, and back.

A 20 mile hike from Oliver Lee (Dog Canyon) SP to Sunspot Solar Observatory Visitor Center, and back down to the park. Strenuous hiking for 10 hours, with 4,800' of elevation gain and loss. Meet at the State Park, and hike to the top. If the park is open, we will park in the park, and contribute $5 each car towards Park Services. If it's closed, we will park outside of the park and walk that less than half a football field distance to get to trail head. Even though the hike is on well maintained trail, 20 mile up and down a mountain could be demanding.

Meet at Kmart at 6:30 am for carpooling from Las Cruces, or meet us at Oliver Lee State Park at 8:00 am (409 Dog Canyon Road, Alamogordo, NM).

yes thanks...it was the senior that made things slow. Stuff happens...planned to do 1/2 of the hike, hit an animal on the way over.... thanks Gene's wife, I was staggering the last 1/2 mile

Jim alone made the round-trip. I chickened out, did it one way. Three other hikers sympathized with my aging bones, and shared the ride from Sunspot down to Oliver Lee State Park. It was a good hike though, and everybody had a good time, except that Michael might have been bored by the slow pace a bit.

We hit an animal on the way. Going to be a bit late.

I will meet you at Oliver Lee SP at 8 AM. I will only be hiking with you to Sunspot. My wife will be picking me up there.

Unless I change my mind, I am likely going to meet you at the park (parking outside the gate) and will hike part of this. I don't expect to be ready to hike another 20 miles and 5700' the day after 23 miles and 3100'.

Actually, this hike is over 5700 feet of elevation gain and loss. Rolling terrain and crossings add up.
