I would like to spend NYD at White Sands, so I am thinking of either hiking the entire Alkali Flat trail (~5 miles), or since it will be day time, do a little exploring off the Alkali Flat trail (maybe out and back to some of the further dunes, not to exceed 5 miles).

DISTANCE is ~5 mi loop (or out and back).

TO BRING: Water, snacks, jacket (layers), money for entrance fee, etc. (if you carpool, please remember to compensate your driver),

ELEVATION GAIN is some 200 ft elevation lost, but effectively it is much more because of the up & down of the dunes

FEES: $3/person. If you have a Federal Lands Pass, please bring them; they are accepted here.

DURATION: 2-3 hours. Park closes at 6pm, so we have to be out by then.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. According to rules of NM, pet must be on a leash at all times.

SKILL LEVEL is is good for a first hike, but still somewhat challenging; the sand is loose and the hike is medium-length (5 mi). We will take breaks and regroup as needed.

TERRAIN is gypsum sand dunes. The recommendation is that you walk barefoot; otherwise, high-ankle boots/shoes with gaiters (to keep sand out of your shoes) also work great.

WEATHER TBA.

AFTERWARDS If there is time, I will bring my sled and we can do some dune sledding, and maybe have a beverage, before heading back to LC. (if anyone else had a sled, please consider bringing it as well.) (or do dinner once we get back to LC) (lots of options)
