Kilbourne Hole

  • Dec 26, 2010 · 9:00 AM

Hike and explore Kilbourne Hole, a maar volcano crater about 1.5–2 hours/34 miles west of El Paso in New Mexico. It is an amazing place and also great for rock hounding. This will be a challenging hike over rough terrain; I know of no trails there. Walking sticks are highly recommended. As the site is on BLM land, there is no fee to enter the crater, but there are no facilities of any kind either. There is no cell phone service. I am not a professional guide, so come at your own risk. See
http://www.celebmtns.... for more details. More information about Kilbourne Hole
here and
here. Meet in El Paso: Academy Sports & Outdoors parking lot, located on the west side of El Paso near the Sunland Park Mall Note: the poster (Samat) is not attending; please see the CotM website and/or contact Eric for more information.

What a great hike with a nice group of guys! We walked along the rim, then down a bit to look for peridot crystals, then down to the floor. The sights from both the rim and floor were amazing. We had to fight off a mountain lion and a pack of wolves, but even that was fun. Hehehe! After that, we went to another location to find quartz crystals and other neat rocks.

Was definately a different kind of hike then what I'm used to, but it was a good change of pace. Found some really cool rocks/crystals and over all had a fun time.

Have always wanted to do this hike, so has Barb, but the date is bad for us. Have to try for a later date. Be safe and above all, have fun!
