Benson Ridge

  • Jan 8, 2011 · 7:30 AM

It will probably snow this Friday evening in Cloudcroft, and there's a 20% chance of snow on Saturday morning. I've been wanting to do another light snow/snow flurry hike for the past 2 weeks, so let's do something this weekend in the Benson Ridge/Bluff Springs area south of Cloudcroft. More details on route/etc forthcoming... please RSVP now! All the hikes in the area are fairly easy, though I'd like to find a route with a decent amount of distance (7 or 8 mi). Meet at:

  • Las Cruces: 7:30 am at the North Main K-Mart (I-25/US 70), in the northeast corner of the parking lot near Shell.

  • El Paso: 7:30 am at the NE Walmart (US 54/Loop 375). Note: your organizer is not meeting here, please self-organize for carpool!

  • Cloudcroft: 9 am at Mountain Top Mercantile (aka Cloudcroft General Store). See map.

Too bad it didn't snow. But there was plenty still on the ground — great hike, great people, as usual.

Met some great new folks, nice weather, great views and had a great visit afterwards at the diner.

    Samat,
I'll be taking my 4-wheel drive truck, I have room for 3 other people in my truck.

I'm still trying to figure out a route. How many 4x4s will we have? Looking at the weather report, I'm a little worried that the forest service road (unplowed) to Bluff Springs may be snowed enough to make passage with 2WD cars difficult. As a backup hike, is everyone fine doing the Rim Trail from Karr Canyon to Sunspot?

Just for context, also this weekend: the El Paso Ridge Walkers has a Slot Canyon hike in Las Cruces Robledo Mountains (difficult): http://elpasoridgewalkers.com/index.php?option=com_eventlist&view=details&id=74:slot-canyon-hike&Itemid=51 and Celebration of the Mountains/El Paso's Audubon Society has a 3-day birding event at the Bosque del Apache NWR (far).
