Valles Canyon is northwest of Las Cruces, only about 12 miles from the airport. According to Greg Magee "this is a moderate 5.5 mile hike with little elevation gain." Valles Canyon is a tributary to Broad Canyon and where the two intersect is the turnaround point. Valles Canyons contains many, many petroglyphs, if archaeology is your thing.
We're leaving in the early afternoon—you don't want to get up too early on a Sunday, do you? If you've been complaining the hikes have been starting too early, then I expect to see you on this one!
Unlike the other "hike & happy hour" events, we'll actually be going to a real happy hour (5–7 pm) for dinner after the hike at High Desert Brewery. (follow link for directions). Beers are $1 off.
DISTANCE is ~6 mi round-trip.
ELEVATION GAIN is ~500 ft or less.
FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!
DURATION: Finish by late afternoon.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.
SKILL LEVEL is reasonably beginner friendly. This among the easiest of the hikes this group does.
TERRAIN desert/prairie. Most of this hike is in an arroyo and will require climbing over some boulders, waterfalls, etc.
WEATHER is clear & sunny, high in upper 60s.
AFTERWARDS we will be going to High Desert Brewery's happy hour. See event description for more information.
