This was popular last week—let's do it again! If you don't care about the Superbowl, join us for late afternoon/evening hike through Box Canyon near Picacho Mountain west of Las Cruces.
Starting at the Picacho Mountain trailhead, we'll make a clockwise loop along the base until we reach the arroyo that goes through Box Canyon. We'll walk through Box Canyon until we get tired, seeing sights like Lee's (sp?) Rock (see photo above).
If you've been complaining that we get up too early for hikes, or that we drive to far, or what have you—finally, a hike for you!
Unlike the other "hike & happy hour" events, we'll actually be going to a real happy hour (5–7 pm) for dinner after the hike at High Desert Brewery. (follow link for directions). Beers are $1 off. We will be sitting outside; while they are heaters, please bring an extra layer if you think you will be cold.
The road the the trailhead can be bumpy and have areas washed out. Four wheel drive vehicles are suggested, but many 2-wheel vehicles have made the trip. When we meet at the post office, please let the group know if you have a 4-wheel drive and would be willing to drive.
DISTANCE is 5–6 mi out and back (could turn into loop).
ELEVATION GAIN is is negligible.
FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!
DURATION: Finish by 5 pm.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.
SKILL LEVEL is reasonably beginner friendly. This among the easiest of the hikes this group does.
TERRAIN is sandy, desert arroyo with a few short sections of rocky desert trail.
WEATHER is TBA.
AFTERWARDS we will be going to High Desert Brewery's happy hour. See event description for more information.
