Hike & Happy Hour: Box Canyon

This was popular last week—let's do it again! If you don't care about the Superbowl, join us for late afternoon/evening hike through Box Canyon near Picacho Mountain west of Las Cruces.

Starting at the Picacho Mountain trailhead, we'll make a clockwise loop along the base until we reach the arroyo that goes through Box Canyon. We'll walk through Box Canyon until we get tired, seeing sights like Lee's (sp?) Rock (see photo above).

If you've been complaining that we get up too early for hikes, or that we drive to far, or what have you—finally, a hike for you!

Unlike the other "hike & happy hour" events, we'll actually be going to a real happy hour (5–7 pm) for dinner after the hike at High Desert Brewery. (follow link for directions). Beers are $1 off. We will be sitting outside; while they are heaters, please bring an extra layer if you think you will be cold.

The road the the trailhead can be bumpy and have areas washed out. Four wheel drive vehicles are suggested, but many 2-wheel vehicles have made the trip. When we meet at the post office, please let the group know if you have a 4-wheel drive and would be willing to drive.

DISTANCE is 5–6 mi out and back (could turn into loop).

ELEVATION GAIN is is negligible.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by 5 pm.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.

SKILL LEVEL is reasonably beginner friendly. This among the easiest of the hikes this group does.

TERRAIN is sandy, desert arroyo with a few short sections of rocky desert trail.

AFTERWARDS we will be going to High Desert Brewery's happy hour. See event description for more information.

MEET for carpool at:

• Las Cruces: 1:00 pm, Fairacres Post Office on Picacho Ave. GPS: [masked]°N,[masked]°W (see on Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, USGS topo map)
• El Paso: 12:00 pm, I-10 and Redd Road Kohl's, in the south end of the parking lot near Starbucks. GPS: [masked]°N,[masked]°W (see on Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, USGS topo map). Note: your host is not meeting here, please self-organize!

I already spoke my mind to a degree during the hike and after the hike, but this thing(the website) asked so here it is again....If you are a organizer/co-organizer who wants to do a particular trail and you post that trail(or you ask someone else to post it for you) you should know the trail when it is time to hike the trail. As a organizer/co-organizer if you are going to be talking negative about the selected trail you posted for yourself or someone else, do folks a favor and keep it to yourself...when you talk negative about a hike before it starts it usually spreads the negative attitude through out the group during the hike. One more thing...if someone(a wanna be organizer/co-organizer) wants to talk about another hiking group in the immediate area in a derogatory way they better get the facts straight. As for the rest of the people that showed up, we had some great convos and made the best of a dis-organized event.

Hi everyone! Does anyone with a four wheel drive have room for me. My car won't make that road.

Just show up at meet up spot and we will figure out cars then. We usually have enough cars.

Ok, think my confusion is cleared up! I'll buy someone a beer if I can carpool from PO to trailhead
