Gila National Forest Catwalk/Trail 207

  • May 14, 2011 · 6:00 AM

Note: details may change! Please keep checking this post.

Another note: The Gila Millers fire is in the middle of nowhere, near the cliff dwellings, and has no effect on the catwalk hike.

Changes from previous event (please comment/update your RSVP if you're unhappy w/ the changes!):

  • Skipping the camping, unless many are interested (please leave a comment/contact me!) Note that the El Paso Ridgewalkers also have a backpacking trip in the nearby Mogollon Mtns this weekend.
  • Leave an hour earlier, and attempt to beat both heat and weekend traffic (which will be heavy through Silver City).

This drive is over 3 hours one way, and turning this into a day hike turns this into an all day event. Please leave your ETA back to LRU/ELP open-ended, unless you're driving yourself.

Tentative plan is to hike 5 miles or so of trail 207, the first mile of which is the Catwalk Recreation Area proper, and then hike back (total ~10 mi). Parking fee is $3/vehicle.

I'd like to catch the Gila Cliff Dwellings on the return trip, but as of May 9, the Miller Fire is dangerously close to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. It's likely it'll close by this weekend.

Meet for carpool:

  • Las Cruces: 6:00 am east of NMSU's Pan Am Center. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps).
  • El Paso: 5:15 am, I-10 and Transmountain Road Shell. Meet and park at the gravel parking lot to the west of the gas station. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps).

One more landmark hike done. Thanks everyone who came out and endured the long drive! Left 6:30 am, got back at shortly before 9.

Not sure if I changed my RSVP correctly so just posting it on here that I am not going to the catwalk.

The Catwalk is east (i.e. upwind) and otherwise pretty far of the fire, so it's unlikely to face closure. I'll check with the Park Service again closer to the hike date.

Saw on the tv new last night? that there are forest fires west of the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Park Service is initiating restrictions (didn't specify what) in these forest areas. You might want to contact the Park Service people/law enforcement for updates closer to the hike date.

Tim, I hear ya.This can be done easily if everyone works together in lieu of a designated leader. The Catwalk is short but historic&scenic.Don?t forget to go down to the creek. The hike begins at the picnic grounds, next to the parking lot. There is a $3 parking fee.The trail heads up canyon along the creek's north bank.A more demanding hike, the Whitewater Creek Trail(FT207).You can do as much as you like then turn around&go back to the Catwalk to the cars.FT207 is 16 miles&connects to other trails.

Good question. I've not been there -- and I don't want this to be the blind leading the blind. But I'm under the impression the site is popular and there's a developed visitor center, etc. A bigger issue: the catwalk is only 1.8 mi, what other hikes are good in the area? (I don't want to drive 6 hours for a 1.8 mi hike)

Just curious if yall(organizers) are gonna wait until the last minute to figure out if you have a "leader" for this hike or if it's going to be another "we'll just wing it" hike.....just curious

Just checking, someone is volunteering to lead here, right? Also, is 7 am meeting time too late? That means it'll be ~10 am when we start hiking, and probably quite hot out there?

the catwalk itself is a really short walk for such a long drive. if one makes the long trip it is best to include the longer hike trails that you can access from the catwalk. i'd love to go back and do more trails in that area but may 14th i'll be in south dakota. i could go before then but don't change the date for me so have fun!

I've never been to the catwalk, I would like to join in to either or both. I think camping overnight sounds great.

I would definitely want to do the catwalk... but I've never been there either.

What are you looking for in a Gila Hike?

    March 24, 2011

  • Samat

Hah, I was actually thinking about doing the catwalk this weekend or the next. The problem: someone who's been there/knows the area *really* needs to be leading… someone please step up for leading a Gila hike!
