After the fire in Ruidoso (http://www.kasa.com/dpps/weather/wildfires/white-fire-still-burning-near-ruidoso_3765858) this past weekend and the extremely dry winter and spring, it's extremely likely that the forest service closes Lincoln National Forest this summer. Time to get those hikes out of the way.
The El Paso Ridgewalkers are doing Anthony's Nose (http://elpasoridgewalkers.com/index.php?option=com_eventlist&view=details&id=84:antonys-nose&Itemid=51) this weekend. If you want a challenging, off-trail desert–mountain hike, you should join them.
If you don't, do this also-challenging hike instead. See the planned route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=http:%2F%2Fcaligula.rhombic.net%2F%7Exjjk%2FSan-Andres-Heart-Attack-Canyon.kml&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=54.005807,35.683594&ie=UTF8&ll=32.812959,-105.77774&spn=0.122487,0.148659&t=h&z=13), about 10 mi, going down San Andres Canyon and back up Heart Attack Canyon. Most the route is in deep forest, so there will be lots of shade/protection if there are strong winds.
Quick disclaimer: this is all relatively high elevation: 9000+ ft (over 2x the height of Las Cruces and El Paso). It may be difficult to breathe.
