Hueco Tanks is a Tx State Park on the east side of El Paso. The only way to gain access to most of the park is to take a guided tour. I have reserved 10 spots (max) on a hiking tour starting at 10 am on Sat, March 29th and 10 spots on a petroglyphs tour starting at 2 pm. Each tour cost $2 ($7 includes entrance to the park), for a total of $11 (paid on arrival at park). Each tour lasts 2-3 hours. According to the personnel at the State Park the hiking tour can be between 2-4 miles, dependent on the group and the amount of time. The petroglyphs tour is shorter, as there is more time spent discussing the area, history, and petroglyphs. We may or may not have time have to sit down and eat lunch, so a lunch that can be eating while hiking would be good.
If you RSVP YES, please make sure you are actually planning on attending, as we need to have 10 people on each tour to use all the reserved spots. If you have to cancel, please do in plenty of time for someone else to take your place (not at 7:00 am on Sat morning).
DISTANCE: is variable depending on what the guide decides to do. Please plan between 2 and 6 mi.
ELEVATION GAIN: is variable.
FEES: $7 park entry and $2 per tour for a total of $11. (entrance for children 12 and under is free, but still have to pay $2 per tour) Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas! (round trip mileage is ~150 miles)
BRING: Water, hat, sunscreen, camera, money for fees, lunch to eat on the trail, backpack (they recommend having hands free for scrambling on rocks).
DURATION: back in Las Cruces around 5:30 or 6pm.
PET FRIENDLY? No. Pets are not allowed on the guided tours.
SKILL LEVEL: should be beginner friendly, but will be guided by park personnel, so please let the leader know if you are a beginner.
TERRAIN: some level paths, but will entail some rock scrambling and off trail sections.
AFTERWARDS: TBA. probably nothing as it will have already been a long day.
