Tonuco Mountain Hike; Lunch at Sparky's after

The hike is 6 miles, with about 800 'elevation gain, takes about 5 hours, it's an easy to moderate hike. Getting to the trailhead needs four wheel drive cars. If you have a four wheel drive car and willing to drive, please comment so.

What:   Hiking to the top of Tonuco Mountain

When:  Sunday March 30, 2014

Meeting Place: KMart: Del Rey and Telshore

Meeting Time:  7:00 am

Difficulty:  moderate, ~800 ft elevation gain

Length:  6 miles

Type:  off trail, it will be a loop hike

Hiking time:  5-6 hours

Bring:  Plenty of water, snacks, sunblock, hat (if needed documentation for border patrol checkpoint on I-25)

Cost: None for hike, but bring money for food, and if you carpool please remember to compensate your driver.

Pets: Yes. Please bring leash and check with other people before unleashing. 

After: Lunch at Sparky's in Hatch-Burgers and BBQ (

Other: This hike is described in Greg Magee's book Day Hikes and Nature Walks in the El Paso-Las Cruces Area. According to the book and multiple sources, we will see petroglyphs and get to explore a old fluorite mine.

Las Cruces: At 7:00 am, K-Mart parking lot on North Main/US 70 and Del Rey, near Shell. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps)

    Hi Steve, I've done this drive before, I can make it with my 2 wheel drive pick up to the base of the mountain. Think we'd could hike from there.

    Steve, please forgive the lack of punctuation in my original post! I meant to say "Shoot, Steve....." NOT "Shoot Steve." Hope I didn't have you too worried about me carrying a six-shooter....

    Would like to go tomorrow, but looks like vehicles will be a problem, since all I have is the car. Have a good time.
