Truchas Lake/Peaks in the Pecos Wilderness (Santa Fe Natl Forest) [backpacking]

Re-schedule of the trip we were supposed to do Memorial Day this year.

We are leaving Las Cruces 9:00am Friday. (For safety reasons, the cars not going to be on the road will be parked at Yubao's driveway. And that will be coordinated Friday morning after the group met at Milagros Saturday.) And we will have ample time to set up tents and get dinner and relax. The hike starts Saturday morning at 7:00 am, and will end Monday whenever it ends and come back at Las Cruces. Anybody who cannot get Friday off may catch up with us at trail head at 7:00 am Saturday morning. Details please contact Samat if you do intend to join us.

We are doing the Truchas Peak, southern approach route:

Truchas Peak: 2nd highest peak (by prominence) in NM. We will bag Pecos Baldy/East Pecos Baldy Peaks along the way.

All the time we will be in high altitude (10,000 ft+) and it will drop to freezing at night (something I found out the hard way): bring spring/winter backpacking gear, it is not summer up there. There will be snow drifts we will have to wade through or walk around (hopefully not much) and a lot of mud.

It was an adventure out in the beautiful forests . Stunning views of the mountains. For me it was a challenging first day, but felt quite accomplished. We covered quite a bit of ground the first day. Thanks follow hikers for supporting me. I wanted to stay a few more days! I am looking for ward to another back pack trip!

So if we go this route 25 miles round trip http://www.backpacker.com/destinations/hikes/563534

That's actually the route we're taking. Without a GPS track I think they're estimating low… but my 30 mi estimate is also high, i.e. I don't think we'll walk more than 30.

I can't make it to this one guys. I had to be treated for heat exhaustion, Doc said I need to rest for about a week. (no hiking or bike riding). Sucks, I really wanted to go. Anyway, If anyone needs to borrow any gear, let me know.

The weather is looking good this weekend! Are we starting at Jack's Creek? Bagging Truchas Peak? Just wondered I have my topology map out scanning the area!

    August 27, 2014

    • Samat

Yes, starting at Jack's Creek trail head north of Pecos, heading to East Pecos Baldy Lake, and then over to Truchas Lake. We'll take the some route back (perhaps a shorter path, need to check my maps). Sorry about not posting a full itinerary guys, I've been really busy (and in the past, nobody read them anyway haha).

No kidding, looks like we had accidentally picked the best time of the year to do this hike.

    What is the total mileage???

    August 22, 2014

    • Samat

I have you to measure everything precisely (and probably won't have time to do so). Expect a 30 mi weekend.
