Waterfall Canyon, Yellow Ridge by Pena Blanca

this hike is in the southern end of the Organs, in the Pena Blanca area. We will hike up a canyon of dry waterfalls, walk along the ridgeline, and come back down a yellow rock formation. This particular time, there is water dripping down on the waterfalls. So, if you bring a water filter, you don't have to carry all the water you need to drink. (This is intended as a joke.)

This hike is half on trail, half off trail. It is a medium level hike.

Bring one gallon of drinking water.

DISTANCE is 5-6 miles loop.

ELEVATION GAIN is ~1000–1200 ft.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by early afternoon.

PET FRIENDLY? Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a leash).

SKILL LEVEL is Medium to Difficult

TERRAIN is off-terrain with high desert brush, with some rock scrambling. Please bring appropriate gear.

WEATHER Sunny and hot. Please bring plenty of drinking water!

AFTERWARDS if enough people are interested, we will go lunching at some local restaurant.

MEET for carpool at:

Las Cruces: 8:00 am, Milagro's Coffee.

El Paso: 7:00 am, I-10 and Transmountain Road Shell. Meet and park at the gravel parking lot to the west of the gas station. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps). Note: your organizer is not meeting here, please self-organize!

Mesquite exit 151 on Interstate 10, on east side of freeway at 8:30 am.

Mossman Arroyo Trailhead: ~8:45 am.

All the caterpillars we saw today were sphinx moths larva. Sphinx moths are large moths (couple of inches across) that look/fly like a small hummingbird with long "sucker straw" mouth that feed on flower nectar. They are quite pretty. You see them flying around gardens in very late afternoons and early evenings
