Soledad Canyon Ridge explore behind the waterfall

Whether you call yourself a hiker or not, most likely, you have been to the waterfall in the Soledad Canyon/Bar Canyon day use area. Have you ever wondered where the water come from? Want to go behind the waterfall, go down to the creek, dip your skin in the crystal clear, icy water? OK. Don't get yourself confused. It is not skin-dipping we are talking about here.

This hike, we will park at the Soledad Canyon/Bar Canyon day use area parking lot, hike to the stone house, climb up on the ridge behind the stone house, walk east on the ridge to the back of the waterfall. We will have a nice view of the Dripping Springs area on the north side of the ridge. If we go far enough, we can look down at the Sanatorium and other structures. Of course, on the south side, we will have a nice view of the drainage of the water source, Big Baldy, and Shark's Tooth. But we are not going to climb any of those things, will simply admire them from distance at this time.

There will be scrambling involved, but not much. We will climb about 1000'. It could be more if everybody wants to go a bit farther up the ridge, so we will have a better and closer view of the Dripping Springs area. The whole hike will be about 5 miles. Factor in the breaks we are going to take, throw in some picture-taking time, it will last somewhere between 4 to 5 hours.

All in all, it's an easy to medium hike that most hikers can handle.

Bring water, snack, sunscreen, hat. Hiking boots and gloves are recommended.

DISTANCE is is ~5 mi round-trip

ELEVATION GAIN is ~1000'.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by late morning/early afternoon.
