Hueco Tanks Pictrograph and Hiking Tours- All day event- $11 for both tours

Hueco Tanks is a TX State Park on the east side of El Paso. The only way to gain access to most of the park is to take a guided tour. I have reserved 10 spots on a pictograph tour starting at 10:30 am on Sat, April 25th and 10 spots on a hiking tour starting at 2 pm(need to arrive at park by 10am). Each tour cost $2 ($7 includes entrance to the park), for a total of $11 (paid on arrival at park).  Each tour lasts 2-3 hours. According to the personnel at the State Park the hiking tour can be between 2-4 miles, dependent on the group and the amount of time. The pictographs tour is shorter, as there is more time spent discussing the area, history, and pictographs. We should have time have to sit down and eat lunch, but a lunch that can be eating while hiking would be good, in case we do not.

If you RSVP YES, please make sure you are actually planning on attending, as we need to have 10 people on each tour to use all the reserved spots. If you have to cancel, please do in plenty of time for someone else to take your place (not at 7:00 am on Sat morning).

I have requested a hike that would take us to the top of West Mountain, which is the park's most strenuous hike. However, I do not think it will be any more difficult than a lot of the hikes we do in the Organs. There is a chance that we will not have a guide for the hike, and instead of hiking with a guide we will explore the public part of the park, North Mountain, if we can get reservations for that area of the park.

DISTANCE: is variable depending on what the guides decides to do. Please plan between 4 and 6 mi.

ELEVATION GAIN:[masked] ft

FEES: $7 park entry and $2 per tour for a total of $11. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas! (round trip mileage is ~150 miles)

BRING: Water, hat, sunscreen, camera, money for fees, lunch, backpack (they recommend having hands free for scrambling on rocks).

DURATION: back in Las Cruces around 5:30 or 6pm (or later if we decided to get a beer or dinner in EP before heading back).

PET FRIENDLY? No. Pets are not allowed on the guided tours.

SKILL LEVEL: Moderate. Pictograph tour will be mostly on trails, with a little off trail climbing. The hike will be more strenuous.

TERRAIN: some level paths, but will entail some rock scrambling and off trail sections.

WEATHER: High of 79 and windy.

AFTERWARDS: Food in EP? to be decided after the hikes.

Thanks to everyone who attend this hiking adventure. I never get tired of Hueco Tanks (expect the steps need to actually enter the park). Please post any picture you would like to share.

Hello. Great idea for a hike. Actually, I tried and actually led my first and only event with the now dead Sierra Club at Hueco Tanks. I actually had hoped it would be attended by far more Sierra Club members that actually showed up. I was disappointed by the response. Soon there after the rules were changed and only officially trained people were allowed to led hikes with the Sierra Club. This event spelled the end of my membership as a Sierra Club member and I am very happy your group has now made that club obsolete. Sorry I work Saturdays and cannot come.
