Bar Canyon behind the waterfall

Whether you call yourself a hiker or not, most likely, you have been to the waterfall in the Soledad Canyon/Bar Canyon day use area.

We will climb up the low ridge from the rock house, get around to the back of the waterfall, have a bird's-eye view of it. On the ridge, we will have a nice view of Dripping Springs area, impressive peaks and vistas of Organs (but we are not climbing any of those, simply to have a look at them). Surveying the whole Las Cruces metropolitan area at the advantage of ridge could be quite a satisfactory pleasure for hikers too.

This is an easy hike that most hikers can handle.

The weather forecast says it's going to be sunny, and the temperature would be in the 70s when we are hiking there. An ideal day to get out of the door, enjoy nature, do some moderate exercise. If you have been in the desert long enough, you should know that these days don't last very long. It's going to get darned hot pretty soon. So come out and enjoy it while we still have it!

Bring at least 2 liters of water, sunscreen, hat, and snacks.

DISTANCE is about 4 mi. round-trip

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by late morning.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.

SKILL LEVEL is beginner/intermediate.

TERRAIN maintained trail, and a little off trail

WEATHER is sunny and hot. It is going to be in the higher 90s as high. So, bring plenty of drinking water

AFTERWARDS LUNCH with alcohol to wash it down? Anyone? la Rosa winery

    BLM posted this notice today:
Bureau of Land Management - Las Cruces District

Caution for those of you planning to visit Soledad Canyon this weekend:
A bee swarm has been observed near the right fork of the Soledad Canyon trail, just before it crosses the wash for the first time. The swarm is estimated to be over 2000 bees. Be aware that it may relocate elsewhere along the trail or it may move completely away from Soledad Canyon day use area.
Use caution when hiking and be aware that dogs barking, children yelling, or other disturbances may agitate the bees. If you encounter the swarm, back away quietly and leave the area.
If attacked, leave the area quickly. An attack could last until the victim leave the area. Cover your face using your hands and arms to protect your eyes and mouth from the bees. Seek shelter inside a car or other shelter.
