This hike is in the same area as the Red House Mountain (4/19/2015) hike, but instead of hiking to the top of a mountain, we will hike in a canyon to a old mining road. This canyon has a great small slot at the beginning with a great place to scramble up a narrow slot with beautiful rocks. To begin we will hike across the foothills to the entrance of the canyon. Then we will scramble up the slot canyon and continue hiking in the canyon until we reach the ridge. This hike will be a full body scramble as we get into the slot. There are many areas were you will have to use arms and legs to get around.

This hike is located east of I-25 at the Hatch Exit. This will be on leisurely off trail hike in the high desert, with some scrambling up dry waterfalls, scree, cactus and bushwhacking. There are amazing rock formations in the canyon and an old barite mine to explore. It will be a warm day and we will take breaks as needed. Towards the end of the hike we will pass through the old barite mine where you can collect many beautiful rocks.

I would recommend bring a higher clearance vehicle, or a 4x4. There will be about 10 miles of dirt road and it gets a bit bumpy towards the end.

After the hike we can have lunch at Sparky's in Hatch before heading home.
