Organ Needle

There are all sorts of comments about the Needle hike: like, "hike of a lifetime, you only do it once," "I'll never go back there again!" etc, etc... The most humorous comment might be the one in the log on the top that says, "now I am here, how the heck am I supposed to get down!" The uniqueness of that humor is, if a hiker hadn't been there, they don't get that taste.

Yes, it's extremely strenuous a hike. The round trip is 8 miles, with close to 4,000' of elevation gain. It takes about 9 hours to do this hike.

The second half of the trail is especially steep and on loose ground. Every step of it demands full body response and mental focus. It is not only a physical challenge, it's also a spiritual/mental/psychological strain. At the very last stage of the ascending, there's a spot of class 4 scrambling that is quite intimidating.

This hike coincides with an Albuquerque group event in the Organs. Meet us at (plaza outside of) Milagro's Cafe at 7:30am or La Cueva parking lot.

Yubao, amazing hike. Definitely the most difficult hike I've been on since moving out here. It was cool seeing my aunt's stunt double and talking to a new group of people. I will be back for more soon!

Since, I will be visiting the area and want to explore Organ Mtns as much as possible, if anyone wants to hike South Rabbit Ear on Sunday, October 11th please let me know. I am kindda desperate to find people for South Rabbit Ear. There are somewhat good descriptions online, but I cannot find gps tracks for backcountry navigator app. But we can explore even if not finishing it; it all looks very beautiful in Organs very much reminding me of similar mountains I hiked in AZ. Thanks in advance.

It has always been my dream to do this hike! I haven't been able to join ya'll yet for a hike, but if it's ok I would love for this to be my first one with ya'll.

Pam, this is an open, very friendly group. Besides, you will get humongously rewarded for doing The Needle hike, and that is, you get to do The Needle hike. One more thing I want to tell you is, like I tell everybody else who did this hike with the group, once you've done this hike, nobody can tell you that there are hikes that are too hard for you! See you on October 10!

Unless someone cancels, there will be two more people from the Albuquerque hiking and outdoor MeetUp that will join this hike. Thanks for leading this hike/scramble, I am really looking forward to bagging this peak.

I will be in the area with ABQ group. Hopefully, we all join you because it's your guys backyard and this is a hard hike. There is a waterfall somewhere around Organ needle. Do you guys plan to hike by it?
