This is a cross post with the Alamogordo group for the February installment of the Canyon Light Series. I have been on 3 out of the last 4 hikes in this series and they have been great. The hikes in this series are off trail and moderately strenuous. The time posted above is the departure time, please arrive 5-10 mins early to organize carpool.
From Alamo site:
Back to Looping!
This route ascends a really great, smaller cut... lots of easier scrambling...
...then tops out low, where we cross a low saddle over into an adjacent Ash Spring Canyon... for one of the nicer bedrock descents around...
The combination makes for an easier outing... with great variety... and... water!
Easy Pace... likely an earlier finish given the easier nature of this route.
Out of town hikers... give yourself a bit of extra time to get to the more rural start for this hike... we'll meet at the Oro Vista Fire Station then do the short carpool over to the start of the hike...
This First Saturday Series... Starts later... goes shorter... finishes earlier...
...yet still hits some great canyons.
We plan to keep the elevation gains below the 1500' mark... and mileage such that we should finish the hikes in the five hour range... or sooner.
It is still off trail... and class I canyoneering... Not for Beginners unless they are ready to stretch themselves with a few challenging scrambles!
Call if you are running late!!
