This is a cross post with the Alamogordo group for the March installment of the Canyon Light Series. I have been on 3 out of the last 4 hikes in this series and they have been great. The hikes in this series are off trail and moderately strenuous. The time posted above is the departure time, please arrive 5-10 mins early to organize carpool.
Cost: $5 per car at Oliver Lee State Park and if you carpool, please compensate your diver; suggested amount is $8-10 per person.
Everyone has hiked the Dog Canyon Trail... but few have hiked Dog Canyon!
The Canyon has a variety of great sections: our Mystic Meander hike in the Fall covered the exceptional upper portion... Ozark Cut.
...below the Line Cabin is the very interesting rock tumble section down to the Narrows...
...The Narrows, likely the most interesting portion of the canyon, requires ropes to enter and exit; not for everyone...
...then there is the bottom section, including the very impressive Riparian Area...
This is our hike on this day.
We'll hike up to the bottom of the Narrows, then exit up to the trail for an easy walk back...
Easy walking... minor Scrambling... and the return/descent along the trail for those wanting an easy exit...
See the Amazing Kong!
It is still off trail... and class I canyoneering... Not for Beginners unless they are ready to stretch themselves with a few challenging scrambles!
We may only take four hours... then again...it is really nice down in there... we could linger!
Entry fee required for parking at Oliver Lee State Park.
Call if you are running late!!
