On Valentine's day, Sunday, Feb 14th, Ann and Drew McPhee are hosting a Scavenger Hunt Hike at Picacho Mt and a potluck cookout at their house near Picacho afterwards. This is being cross listed with the Las Cruces Search and Rescue and the runners group, so it could be a BIG party! Hot tub is on, pool is off - Polar Bear plunge anyone?
High clearance and/or 4wd vehicles are recommended to get to the BLM Picacho Mt trailhead. Once at the trailhead you will pick up Scavenger Hunt list from Ann (take a digital picture of the items).
It's about 1.5 mile up to the top. We'll meet at the parking lot after and see who got the most items. Potluck cook out at McPhee's after. Ann will provide beer, wine, burgers, veggie kabobs. Hot tub is on, pool is off - Polar Bear plunge anyone?
Distance - 3 miles round trip to the top of Picacho Mt.
Elevation Gain - 1000 feet to the top
Fees - None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!
Duration - Variable; we finish when we finish. Aim for getting done with hike by 5:30 pm or earlier. Potluck will occur afterwards and could last until 8 or 9ish.
Pet Friendly - Yes. You must have a way to restrain your dog (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so. Ann requests that only 3 dogs come to her house (see comments below).
Skill Level - Moderate. This hike will be mostly on trail, but the trail is steep with loose rock.
Terrain - Loose, gravel, scree on a steep mountainside.
Weather - is TBD, it can be windy on the top. Typically doesn't matter, we usually hike rain or shine, unless there is a lightning storm or a particularly bad wind storm. We won't decide to cancel until an hour before the event.
Afterwards - Potluck at the McPhee's house near Picacho Peak. Directions will be provided after the scavenger hunt.
Meet - At Las Cruces: 2 pm at the US Fairaces Post Office. What You Should Bring
Clothing - Weather Appropriate attire. Check the day of the event, plan accordingly. You will also be exercising and sweating so keep that in mind. Wear thick soled shoes with some tread. Bring a swim suit if you would like to take the Polar Bear plunge afterwards (or soak in the hot tub).
Water - Always a good idea in the desert. At least a liter per person is preferable.
Camera- for taking pictures of the items on the scavenger hunt list
For potluck- The McPhee's are providing beer, wine, burgers, veggie kabobs. Please bring a food item and drink(s) to share.
Kid Friendliness - As the parent or guardian you know best what your child is capable of. Use common sense, but if you need further details ask in the comments. In the end you and you alone are responsible for your child.
Medical Concerns - This is at times strenuous exercise, performed outdoors. If you are unsure for any reason please consult your physician before attempting any of our hikes.
Late Arrival - It is very important that if you are going to be late or decide to cancel at the last minute to let us know. We don't want to hold up the group because of stragglers. And please RSVP, it really helps if we have an accurate accountability of the number of hikers.
See you soon!
