Subject to change and cancellation:
Plan: Friday; drive to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, an approx. 12 hour drive. Car/tent camp south of Jacob Lake on Friday night in the dispersed camping zone. Early Saturday morning get dropped off at the North Rim, North Kaibab Trail Head. Hike down the North Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River. Then hike up the South Kaibab Trail to the South Rim. Camp at South Rim or in Flagstaff Saturday night. Sunday drive home.
North Rim elevation: 8,241 feet South Rim elevation: 7,260 feet
Trip Rating: Strenuous/Difficult
Day Hike Length: 21 miles total: 14 miles down, 7 miles up.
Hiking time: 12 to 14 hours, with short stops along the route. We can resupply and purchase snacks and various drinks at Phantom Ranch.
Elevation Change: 5,761 feet down, and 14 miles to Phantom Ranch----4,780 feet up, and 7 miles to the south rim.
Cost: Approximately $125.00 per person if 8 participants go. Fee must be paid in full 3 weeks prior to departure and is fully refundable should the trip be cancelled.
The fee covers the cost of the rental van, about $650, and the fuel, approximately $350 for the round trip. It will be a 1400 mile trip to and from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I will need to rent the van here in El Paso for 5 days. Thursday the 10th thru Monday the 14th.
In order for this outing to happen we will need a van driver or drivers, by that I mean one or two people who want to see and experience the North Rim, South Rim, and all of the various visitor centers and displays, but do not want to do the rim to rim hike. The driver, drivers would still be able to hike the upper portions of trails on the south rim. The North Rim Visitor Center would be closed at this time but the South Rim is open 365 days a year, and has many things to see and do. The driver, drivers, would be exempt from paying the $125 van and fuel fee. The hiking participants would share in the driving to and from the GC. The van driver, drivers, would have to drive solo from the North Rim to the South Rim and pick us up at top of the South Kaibab Trail at the conclusion of the hike or hike to the rim with us. It is an approximate 4 hour drive between the north and south rim. The van is an eight person van, thus the limit of six hikers and two drivers.
This outing is also contingent upon the road from Jacob Lake to the North Rim being open. I'm referring to an early, heavy snow which would close the road to the North Rim and of course cause the trip to be cancelled.
Call me to reserve a spot for this outing. Mike[masked]
