6.8 Mile Tour de Cloudcroft Hike

Michael has decided to do a 6.8 mile hike throughout the Village of Cloudcroft since all the trails in the Lincoln National Forest are closed to public use, the Village is open to the public.  It started raining in Cloudcroft yesterday and the temperatures during the day are in the mid-70's.  This hike will take us through most of the roads in Cloudcroft and give everyone the chance to really see the village plus give some much needed relief from the desert heat.  The scenery within the village limits is very beautiful.  I drove the entire length of this route to get the mileage and came upon some of the local wildlife that lives within and by the village; porpupine, racoon, squirrels, deer, elk, and a young bear looking for food (maybe we'll be as lucky).  We will start on Burro Street by the Western Cafe and do a sort of clockwise tour of the village ending back at the Western Cafe.  I will rate this hike as Moderate because of the length and because we will be walking up and down hill/mountain roads the entire hike.   Michael will be in Cloudcroft at Mountain Top Mercantile at 10 a.m. on Saturday.  Carlos will be at the NE Transmountain Walmart on Saturday at 8:00 a.m., ready to leave at 8:15 a.m., and caravan to Cloudcroft, (Those interested in carpooling can make arrangements with each other at Walmart, if you carpool please help each other out with fuel costs), will arrive in Cloudcroft, NM at Mountain Top Grocery Store around 9:45-10:00 a.m.  Hike will be 6.8 miles in length.  Should be done with hike no later than 3:00 p.m.  Please bring PLENTY OF WATER, Food/Snacks, hat, light coat, good walking shoes/boots, and a poncho.  Optional; camera, and binoculars.  After the hike, for those interested, stop for FOOD/DRINK at either the Western Cafe (no credit cards accepted), Cross-Eyed Moose, or Big Daddy's.  Contact Michael at (915)[masked] if you have any questions.  Please make sure vehicles are fueled and ready to go.

Pets are welcome, but must be on a leash, because we will be walking with the village limits.

El Paso Group will meet at NE El Paso Walmart at 8:00 a.m.

Las Cruces Hiking Group please self-organize and meet at K-Mart on Hwy 70 in Las Cruces 8:30 a.m.  Justin will lead the caravan from LC.

Michael will be in Cloudcroft at 9:45 a.m. to meet all others.

This was my first meetup. Was a little nervous as I'm usually the quiet type but everyone was very friendly. Had a great time and will be looking to go on more hikes in the future with the group.

Andre, not on this hike. She's about to cone onto heat so its best she stays home. You're welcome to ride with me (you can bring your dog) if you don't mind riding in a old beat up truck! Haha!

Be aware: 20% chance of t-storms on Saturday: http://www.wunderground.com/US/NM/Cloudcroft.html. Not a reason to cancel a hike, but a reason to not forget your poncho.

Tim, since you live in Alamo just drive up to CC and meet us there. Nothing to fill out, just RSVP on the website so we know whether to wait for you or not.

This would be my first hike with the group. Since this isn't on a trail do I need to fill out a form first?

Just a bit on info for Saturday. Cloudcroft will be having their annual July Jamboree (9th/10th) at Zenith Park. There will be arts and crafts booths setup for those of you interested in shopping after the hike.

Samat, if you decide to go, will you lead the LC group caravan to Cloudcroft? (That is if we get anyone from LC interested in going)

As soon as the Lincoln National Forest receives enough moisture, they will lift the fire restrictions. As Samat has posted it has a 12/31/11 date but it also has additional wording that says "or until rescinded," so hopefully that will be within the next few weeks. Rained on Sunday and Monday too.

I've learned to take what the rangers say w/ a grain of salt... but the closure order (http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5300002.pdf) has an unusually late expiration of Dec 31, 2011.

that's a great idea. I spoke to a ranger this weekend and the word is that lincoln natl forest will be closed until 2013...
