The full moon is this Friday, and White Sands National Monument has extended hours, open until 11 pm. Perfect timing for (another) full moon hike if you didn't make it before!
This 4½–5 mi hike is relatively flat yet still somewhat strenuous (it's loose sand dunes the entire route).
This is not the same as the ranger-led full moon walk, which is on Thursday and requires RSVP (now full). There are plenty of other activities (concerts, etc) at White Sands that evening as well should you not want to do the hike.
Note on footwear: if you've done this before, you know to wear ankle-high footwear, or go barefoot. Gypsum sand is not fun in your shoes.
Please bring a flashlight in case of emergencies, but please don't plan on using it (it's better to walk only by moonlight).
I'd like to start the hiking by 8:00 pm; we'll see sunset out in the dunes and give us 3 hours to enjoy the hike. Sunset is at 8:15; twilight at 8:43.
$3/person entry fee (good for a week).
