White Sands full moon hike for July

  • Jul 15, 2011 · 6:00 PM

The full moon is this Friday, and White Sands National Monument has extended hours, open until 11 pm. Perfect timing for (another) full moon hike if you didn't make it before!

This 4½–5 mi hike is relatively flat yet still somewhat strenuous (it's loose sand dunes the entire route).

This is not the same as the ranger-led full moon walk, which is on Thursday and requires RSVP (now full). There are plenty of other activities (concerts, etc) at White Sands that evening as well should you not want to do the hike.

Note on footwear: if you've done this before, you know to wear ankle-high footwear, or go barefoot. Gypsum sand is not fun in your shoes.

Please bring a flashlight in case of emergencies, but please don't plan on using it (it's better to walk only by moonlight).

I'd like to start the hiking by 8:00 pm; we'll see sunset out in the dunes and give us 3 hours to enjoy the hike. Sunset is at 8:15; twilight at 8:43.

$3/person entry fee (good for a week).

Meet for carpool at:

  • Las Cruces: At 6:45 pm, K-Mart parking lot on North Main/US 70 and Del Rey, near Shell. See map ( OpenStreetMap or Google Maps). Note: your organizer is not meeting here, please self-organize!
  • El Paso: At 6:00 pm, Walmart at Transmountain/US 54 at the west-most parking lot towards US 54. See map ( Google Maps).
  • White Sands: At 7:45 pm, at Alkali Flat trail head.

More information: Alkali Flat Trail at the NPS; Map; GPS track.

I really apologize for getting lost at Lake Otero. It took us about 20 mins to find the next marker, but when we did, we made it back fine.

Hi Everyone - Just wanted to leave my phone number in case you can't find us at the Alkali Flats Trailhead: [masked] (T-mobile, hopefully there's reception). I'll be meeting the El Paso group at the Walmart on 54 and driving up 54 to Alamogordo and then down to White Sands. Please make sure you have enough gas in your car if you're driving or enough spare change for drivers for gas reimbursement if you're catching a lift. Looking forward!

anyone from LC wanna meet up for some food before heading out to white sands?

    July 15, 2011

  • Michelle

This meetup might be very flexible: some people may want to bring a cooler and have a picnic while listening to live music, other people may want to hike. Whatever you end up doing, please make sure that when you carpool, everyone is agreed on how non-drivers are getting back to the Kmart/Walmart. For hikers, if you will already have eaten dinner by 7:45 pm, bring a sweet snack for a mid-way trail break if you want. For those who won't have eaten, bring something salty for a late dune dinner

I'm coming from Alamogordo, where can I meet up with the group?

    July 13, 2011

Hi Lisa, it's a shorter drive from LC, so you don't have to meet at the K-Mart listed above until 6:45 pm.

Is there a meet time of 6:00 or 6:45 for this hike? I work until 6:00 pm so wondering on time frame to leave LC?
