Lincoln forest is opening!! SO... I want to do a cool higher-altitude hike in/around the Ski Apache - Sierra Blanca area. From Ruidoso go north thru town then east on 532 (the ski run road)
I posted Sunday the 31st but the date can be changed.
Meet at 10 AM at the trailhead, it is very near the ski resort parking lot at the very top end of the road. I posted 7 AM from Las Cruces, its about a 3 hour drive... however I may camp out the night before.
This hike is strenuous at altitude, (cooler!) it goes from 9800 ft to 11300 ft in 2 1/2 miles roughly, up to the lookout platform above the gondola house at the top of the ski area. If the weather holds (i.e. no lightning) we can venture around above treeline possibly to summit Sierra Blanca near 12000 ft. The peak ridge has the only tundra in southern NM.
