Saturday (Sept 24) is National Public Lands Day. Several camping areas and hiking trails are free. To celebrate, we’re going to do a difficult hike (sorry for the late notice!), hiking across the tallest mountain range in southern NM.
This hike is one-way and involves a shuttle, so we have limited space (max of 4 people, maybe 5), unless more are willing to meet earlier and park their car at Ski Apach (contact me ASAP if interested).
Mileage is on the order of some 17 mi, and has an elevation gain of some 5000 ft.
Planned route: start at Three Rivers Trail (T 44), meet the Crest Trail (T 25), head south to Lookout Mountain, across the Apache Bowl, and take a ski slope down (I forget the name: Game or Deep Freeze?) to the Ski Apache parking lot.
- Las Cruces: 6:00 am, K-Mart parking lot on North Main/US 70 and Del Rey, near Shell.
- El Paso: 5:30 am, Walmart at Transmountain/US 54 at the west-most parking lot towards US 54.
- Trailhead: 8:00 am, Three Rivers Campground.
