Both WSMR's Trinity Site and the NRAO's Very Large Array (VLA) open house are on Saturday, Oct 1. This may be the last year the Trinity Site open house is free.
The extent of hiking is some 0.5 mi total at the Trinity Site, and I'd like to be there at 8 am and stay for some 2 hours (if that). I'm going extra-early this year to get some morning-light photography done.
From there, we'll go do a hike — Timber Peak in the Magdelena District of the Cibola NF. Trip is some 6 mi, 1200 ft elevation gain (see comments). Timber Peak at Summit Post (http://www.summitpost.org/timber-peak/685234).
After that, we'll continue on to the VLA and take the facilities tour and wander on the grounds.
If everyone's up for it, on the way back we can catch late lunch/dinner at Socorro Springs Brewery in Socorro. Good food & one of the better breweries (of the few there are) in NM.
TWO forms of government-issued photo ID. WSMR can be picky about security; it's not worth the headache of challenging them, and the side of the road is not a place to fight for civil rights Lunch/Water — There are refreshments at both the Trinity Site and the VLA, but outside of Socorro there are few restaurants/stores. Meeting/carpool info
