Trinity Site, Timber Peak, and Very Large Array

  • Oct 1, 2011 · 5:15 AM

Both WSMR's Trinity Site and the NRAO's Very Large Array (VLA) open house are on Saturday, Oct 1. This may be the last year the Trinity Site open house is free.

The extent of hiking is some 0.5 mi total at the Trinity Site, and I'd like to be there at 8 am and stay for some 2 hours (if that). I'm going extra-early this year to get some morning-light photography done.

From there, we'll go do a hike — Timber Peak in the Magdelena District of the Cibola NF. Trip is some 6 mi, 1200 ft elevation gain (see comments). Timber Peak at Summit Post.

After that, we'll continue on to the VLA and take the  facilities tour and wander on the grounds.

If everyone's up for it, on the way back we can catch late lunch/dinner at Socorro Springs Brewery in Socorro. Good food & one of the better breweries (of the few there are) in NM.

Please bring

  • TWO forms of government-issued photo ID. WSMR can be picky about security; it's not worth the headache of challenging them, and the side of the road is not a place to fight for civil rights
  • Lunch/Water — There are refreshments at both the Trinity Site and the VLA, but outside of Socorro there are few restaurants/stores.

Meeting/carpool info

  • Las Cruces: 5:15 am, K-Mart parking lot on North Main/US 70 and Del Rey, near Shell.

Not sure where I or anyone else could... with a 2 hour drive to San Antonio/Socorro, and 30 min (with construction on US 380), and probably 30 min to get through security (it took *45 min* last I went, arriving ~10 am) I think I've time scheduled right.

Mm in the absence of finding another suitable trail, Timber Peak looks good. It's listed in the _100 Hikes in New Mexico_ book, and all those hikes are reasonable. Also, moving leave time up from 5:30 to 5:15... there's construction on US 380, and I want to get to the Trinity Site as early as possible.

Hi Samat. I cancelled the other hike I had planned this week. A friend is coming in Friday from Colorado. Depending on when he leaves I would be up for this, but I'd have to meet up with you guys at the hike location as I won't be up early enough to join you guys at the Trinity Site. Keep me posted if you can on where you will be meeting at a trailhead, have fun at the Trinity site!

Since we're going early, I'd like to do a hike somewhere in the Cibola/Magdelena Mountains outside of Socorro on the way to/from the VLA. However, I don't know the area well--any suggestions?
