The BLM is creating an extension of the Sierra Vista Trail from Dripping Springs to Soledad Canyon; the grand opening of this segment is Saturday, Nov 5.

The trail is new, and would be defined better if more people trampled it. It’s important to show your face at BLM events like this, it’s one of the many ways they determine recreation funding.

At 9 am at the new trail head off Dripping Springs Road, there will be some sort of ribbon cutting/golden shovel/etc grand opening. Coffee and light breakfast should be provided, followed by a minor area cleanup. Hopefully, we start hiking at 9:30 am. If you’re a beginner hiker, feel free to come out! The BLM will have a shuttle for those who only want to do the new segment (some 2.5 mi); the rest of the group is not doing this, however.

Planned route starts at the new trail head off Dripping Springs Road, hike to the existing trail head off Soledad Canyon Road, and hike the existing Sierra Vista trail down to the Mesquite/Mossman Arroyo trail head.

Tentatively, we’ll meet at 8 so we can make sure we have cars at both ends of the trail. The El Paso Ridge Walkers and a few El Paso folks are doing this route in reverse, so depending on how many people do our hike and theirs, we may just do a key-swap. Please RSVP as soon as you can, and stay abreast of changes/other details.

DISTANCE is ~9.5 mi, one-way.

ELEVATION: The trail is actually (net) downhill, though there are many ups & downs as the trail goes & out of arroyos.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by mid-afternoon.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a leash).

SKILL LEVEL is intermediate (mind the distance). No whiners!

TERRAIN is mostly flat trail through high desert, going up & down and in & out of arroyos. Trail is mostly gravel. Please bring appropriate gear.
