Hike Baylor Canyon to Agurrie Springs and back

  • Dec 24, 2011 · 8:00 AM

Up and over, and back. Its an oldie but goodie. Burn off those holiday calories.

DISTANCE is ~13 mi round-trip, out and back.

ELEVATION GAIN is ~1500 ft to the top of the pass. Because we go down & up the other side, it's another 1000 ft coming back up. So, expect 2500 ft of net climb.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: 4–5 hours. Hopefully finish by 1 pm.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a leash).

SKILL LEVEL is intermediate. No whiners!

TERRAIN starts in the desert (with no shade), climbs to riparian forest (juniper, etc). There will definitely be snow on the east side descent of the hike.

WEATHER may include light snow.

AFTERWARDS we may get lunch.

MEET for carpool at:

  • Las Cruces: 8:00 am, K-Mart parking lot on North Main/US 70 and Del Rey, near Shell. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps).
  • El Paso: 7:15 am, I-10 and Transmountain Road Shell. Meet and park at the gravel parking lot to the west of the gas station. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps). Note: your organizer is not meeting here, please self-organize!

Nothing like hiking through virgin snow and light snow showers to see landscape _rarely_ ever covered in 1 ft of the stuff. Thanks Marshall for organizing!

Updated description w/ more details. Done this probably a dozen times and I've yet to have a complete GPS track.

Did you want to meet at a carpool location at 8, or start hiking at 8?
