North Anthony's Nose


Another cross-post w/ the El Paso Ridgewalkers.

North Anthony's Nose (not to be confused with Anthony's Nose, which is south of NM 404 in Texas) is the highest point of the Franklin Mountains in New Mexico.

DISTANCE is ~6 mi.

ELEVATION GAIN is ~1000 ft gained.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by mid/late afternoon.

PET FRIENDLY? Not particularly, unless your animal is well-suited to desert hiking. A German Shepherd once came on a hike in the area and left with bloody paws that took several months to heal. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a leash).

SKILL LEVEL is NOT beginner friendly. No whiners!

TERRAIN is ½ off trail, going up loose rocky slopes and through heavy brush (various cacti and other evil prickly things). Wearing shorts is not recommended.

WEATHER is unknown.

AFTERWARDS we may stop by Chope's (La Mesa, NM), if we finish before 2 pm. Cash only.

El Paso: 7:45 am, Sierra Vista Trail trailhead in Anthony. See map ( [OpenStreetMap]. Take NM 404 east from Interstate 10 exit 162 (or NM 404 west from MLK Boulevard) and head to the top of the pass. Heading east, immediately after the road goes from 3-lane to 2-lane (4.2 mi), there will be a turn off to your left where there is a white gate. Please ask if you need better directions.
