Hillsboro Peak

  • May 19, 2012 · 6:45 AM

Cross post w/ the El Paso Ridgewalkers.

Hillsboro Peak, part of the Black Range of the Gila Mountains, is one of the tallest peak in the Gila National Forest.

We'll start at Emory Pass Vista (along NM 152) and hike up to the top of Hillsboro Peak, upon which a heliport/fire lookout sits.

DISTANCE is ~12 mi roundtrip.

ELEVATION GAIN is just under 2000 ft gained.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Should be finished by early/mid afternoon.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a leash).

SKILL LEVEL is challenging, mostly because of elevation and elevation gain. No whining!

TERRAIN is riparian/alpine forest, on rocky/dirt forest service trail. The elevation is high, and the last bit of the trail to Hillsboro Peak is also a bit steep. Please be okay with the elevation!

WEATHER is TBA.

AFTERWARDS we may stop for late lunch/beers. Probably Pepper Pot or Sparky's in Hatch, NM, or Blue Moon Bar in Radium Springs, NM (please bring cash).

MEET for carpool at:

  • Las Cruces: 7:15 am, K-Mart parking lot on North Main/US 70 and Del Rey, near Shell. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps).
  • El Paso: 6:45 am, I-10 and Transmountain Road Shell. Meet and park at the gravel parking lot to the west of the gas station. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps). Note: your organizer is not meeting here, please self-organize!
  • Trailhead: 9 am (tentative) at Emory Pass Vista. See map (OpenStreetMap)

Anna, just to point out, it's May *19* and NOT May 26. Would the El Paso folks know of a better carpool meeting point closer to UTEP?
