We attempted Signal Peak a few months ago… it didn't work out because of the Tour de Gila shutting down the highway. We're going to make it this time!
Signal Peak is one of the highest peaks in the Gila National Forest. It tops 9000 ft and has one of the best views of the Gila (unfortunately, we may not get to see them because of the weather).
DISTANCE is 5 mi roundtrip, out and back.
ELEVATION GAIN is 1700 ft gained, topping 9000 ft.
FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!
DURATION: Finish by lunch/early afternoon. I personally need to be back in El Paso by 6.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash).
SKILL LEVEL is moderate. Please be acclimated to high elevation hiking.
TERRAIN is well-maintained forest service trail in forest.
WEATHER has a 40% chance of rain/thunderstorms. I don't mind the rain, so unless the weather is particularly bad please bring boots/panchos/etc and don't mind getting dirty.
AFTERWARDS we may get lunch in Silver City.
