Signal Peak (or bust)

  • Jul 7, 2012 · 6:45 AM

We attempted Signal Peak a few months ago… it didn't work out because of the Tour de Gila shutting down the highway. We're going to make it this time!

Signal Peak is one of the highest peaks in the Gila National Forest. It tops 9000 ft and has one of the best views of the Gila (unfortunately, we may not get to see them because of the weather).

DISTANCE is 5 mi roundtrip, out and back.

ELEVATION GAIN is 1700 ft gained, topping 9000 ft.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by lunch/early afternoon. I personally need to be back in El Paso by 6.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash).

SKILL LEVEL is moderate. Please be acclimated to high elevation hiking.

TERRAIN is well-maintained forest service trail in forest.

WEATHER has a 40% chance of rain/thunderstorms. I don't mind the rain, so unless the weather is particularly bad please bring boots/panchos/etc and don't mind getting dirty.

AFTERWARDS we may get lunch in Silver City.

MEET for carpool at:

  • Las Cruces: 6:45 am, east of NMSU's Pan Am Center. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps).
  • El Paso: 6:00 am, I-10 and Transmountain Road Shell. Meet and park at the gravel parking lot to the west of the gas station. See map (OpenStreetMap or Google Maps). Note: your organizer is not meeting here, please self-organize!

Great hike, especially if taking alternative routes coming back.

@Jessi: Signal Peak is outside Pinos Altos, near Silver City, NM. I.e. the Gila. It will be hot but the trail is high altitude and mostly shaded. @Sherry: Leaving LRU at 6:45, I'm hoping we start hiking by 9.
