Cross post w/ the El Paso Ridgewalkers.
This is a new trail recently opened in 2010. It follows the old railroad grade that came up from La Luz to CloudCroft. There are some fantastic, destroyed railroad trestles (though nothing as large as the Mexican Canyon Trestle) as the hike follows a the relatively easy-walking railway grade up into High Rolls, and it's interesting to see the subtle change from high desert to pine trees as you slowly gain elevation.
DISTANCE is 8–9 mi, loop.
ELEVATION GAIN is ~900 ft gained
FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!
DURATION: Finish by early afternoon.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash).
SKILL LEVEL is moderate, but mind the distance. No whiners!
TERRAIN is sandy/rocky graded path (the trail is a converted railroad grade).
WEATHER may include thunderstorms. Please bring a poncho, just in case.
AFTERWARDS we may stop for late lunch in Cloudcroft.
