Who made it to the top?

    September 24, 2012

    • Samat

Everyone but me (predictably, I suppose) made it to the top. I was defeated by this short 5 ft ledge section at the dozens of feet from the top… got vertigoed-out when I tried to get around it. Just means I have to do it again! (Bringing a rope, and a pair of garden clippers, the next time…)

    Two words: ass kicking.

A great but hard hike on a beautiful day. Thanks Yubao!

Wonderful hike, ready for getting up there again next month. Sixty some old boy and gal made the needle., only the ones made it might be able to fully appreciate that.

    I'm happy with 60 miles a month ...

It won't surprise me if my knee is sore by the end of the hike tomorrow, but it should hold up. It's held up through 60 miles per week of marathon training and hikes of greater length and similar elevation change, and it's feeling 100% right now. I'm just overly cautious. I do have a couple of trekking poles. I dug them out earlier but I hadn't decided if it was worth taking. I'll definitely bring one along--thanks for the tip.

Michael, the trip back down can be hard on a grumpy knee. Do you have a trekking pole? That can make a BIG difference.

Sorry for the late RSVP. I didn't make up my mind to do it until this evening; my knee was a little grumpy from a run yesterday that was making me nervous. I plan on meeting you at Dripping Springs so I'll have my car there just in case I need to turn around for any reason, and it's easier for me just to cut across Baylor Canyon Road anyway.

At ~10 people we're at a good number of participants, so no point adding a description this late. If you didn't know from the previous comments, this is an extremely difficult hike. The high tomorrow is 93°F, but is partly cloudy, so hopefully it's not unbearably hot. There's a water cache along the way, so please bring as much water as you need, but perhaps it's OK to leave the extra at home. See everyone tomorrow.

Does anyone having a climbing rope? There's a knife edge-like ledge I'm worried about. A rope won't save anyone on it but the psychology of having something to hold onto can't hurt.

This is an incredibly difficult and steep trek. Just throwing that out there for those considering trying to tackle this peak.

Bump. Some may have missed previous comments (i.e. this one). Plan approx 9hr round trip.

I haven't been able to get any commitment from the BLM to open the Dripping Springs gate any earlier for us (it officially opens at 8). Changing meet time to 7:30 at Milagro (we can carpool to Dripping Springs and save on parking fees). I'd like to have started (much) earlier but no sense leaving early to end up waiting for the gate to open. Date & time not changing this time!

I just talked to Manny with blm who said the gate would be open by 7:30

Has anyone on this hike even done this trip before or even scouted it?

    September 18, 2012

    • Yubao

Yes, a few of us have done it before. It takes a combination of physical fitness, adventurous spirit and strong will power to do something like this.

As Mike pointed out, this is an extremely challenging scramble (more than just a hike!) and highly NOT recommended for inexperienced hikers or those not in very good shape.

I can't believe I missed this one - In the middle of doing a federal mandate - Narrow banding of the "part 90" radio equipment!!! This is really beginning to suck!

There is still plenty of time to become conveniently "ill"...

Mike is right. The trail is pretty well marked out. And 9 hour round trip planning makes sense. I did an 18 mile yesterday over 9,000 feet altitude with only one other hiking buddy, off trail, adventurous, exceedingly beautiful terrain. The point is, comparing with Organ Needle, the 18 mile trek was just a cake walk. If that makes any sense.

Samat, you should mention in the description that the BLM rates this as the toughest one day hike in New Mexico.

I second that and agree with that assessment 100%.

I've been wanting to do this for some time but I'm a bit nervous about it. Is there somebody going that's done this before and knows the route well?

    September 3, 2012

    • Mike F.

Yubao knows it well. I have been only once but the trail is marked (fairly well) with small piles of rocks (cairns).

      September 4, 2012

    • Mike F.

Do plan about 9hrs for the round trip!

      September 4, 2012

  • David

I've done it before but don't know the route WELL.
