Picacho Mountain and EAA breakfast

The 3rd Sunday of every month, the Las Cruces Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) (http://www.zianet.com/EAA/) hosts a fund-raising breakfast, from 8–10 am at the Las Cruces airport. For $6, juice, coffee, omelets, pancakes, and sausage are provided. It's a good social event, and you get to see some of the interesting builds and restoration projects the EAA is working on.

Afterwards (hopefully we'll start at ~9:30 am), we'll hike the nearby Picacho Mountain. Rising a 1000 ft above Las Cruces' West Mesa, you can see this mountain from everywhere in Las Cruces as you look west.

Normally, you need 4WD to get to the BLM-maintained trailhead. If we're unable to secure vehicles we will park in a nearby subdivision and walk to the trailhead, adding another 2–3 mi to the hike.

Directions to the Experimental Aircraft Association's Hangar:

From Las Cruces/El Paso, head west on Interstate 25 until exit 132. Turn north (right) onto Crawford Blvd. and heads towards the Las Cruces Airport. Turn east (right) onto Zia Blvd. and head around the corner. When Zia Blvd. ends, EAA's hangar is on your left. Park where appropriate and walk around the building (through the gate) to the entrance. DISTANCE is ~10 mi round-trip (assuming we are unable to get 4WDs to park closer); otherwise, 7 mi.

ELEVATION GAIN is ~1200 feet gained.

FEES: $6 for breakfast; none for hike. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by early/mid afternoon.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.

SKILL LEVEL is *NOT* beginner friendly. No whiners!

TERRAIN is arid desert. Plenty of sand-filled arroyos, prickly plants, etc. We will be staying on-trail.
