New Year’s Day Hike on Tortugas Mountain

Tortugas Mountain, also known as “A Mountain” (but the real “A Mountain” is in Tucson), on the east side of Las Cruces between the University and the Organ Mountains, is a great place to start 2013 off. There will be two options, first we will hike around the base of the Mountain (~4 miles, with little elevation gain), and end up close to the cars, people may then choose if they would like to hike to the top of Tortugas to enjoy the view.

I am starting the hike later for those who need a little more time to sleep in. We will meet at the Sunset Parking lot across from Centennial High School.

Distance: ~4 miles or ~7 miles.

Duration: ~2-4 hours. The pace will not be too fast, and the group will take short breaks as necessary.

Elevation gain: Dependent on choice either ~100 ft or ~1000ft.

Terrain: Fair trail with some rocky places.

Skill level: Beginner friendly for the around part, more intermediate for the up part.

Pets friendly?: Yes. Please bring a leash.

What to bring?: Water, snacks, camera, (champagne to have at the top?)

MEET at:

  • Las Cruces: 10:00 am at Tortugas Mountain's Sunset Parking lot. See map.

I had to cancel on this one. Reason being that I would have to drive 50 miles, not that I do not mind, but I have to work the following day. Have a great time! Hope to join you all on another hike soon. I will be doing the one at the Franklin Mountains tomorrow instead. Hope Raena feels better.

Happy New Year's Eve! I have been under the weather. I am hoping that I will be well enough to attend tomorrow's hike. If I am not, Yubao has agreed to lead in my place. Should be a beautiful day.

It sounds like fun. I printed the map and directions to meet at Dripping Springs Rd. Is this correct? Is this the same place as Mountain Sunset parking lot? A little confused...sorry. Just want to be sure to meet at the right place and on time.

I updated the the original post w/ a map. From Interstate 25, head east on University and keep going as it turns into Dripping Springs Road and heads out of town. You'll see a stoplight with a large high school campus to your left; take a right at the light onto a short gravel road up to a pavilion where everyone will be meeting. Have fun everyone!

I will try to find my way to the Mountain location for this hike as long as its not below freezing. I am just learning about the area but I lived in Ruidoso in the past. Did hiking in the mountains around Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos. I have hiked in other states in the US also and have traveled internationally. Look forward to meeting other hikers.
