Tortugas Mountain, also known as “A Mountain” (but the real “A Mountain” is in Tucson), on the east side of Las Cruces between the University and the Organ Mountains, is a great place to start 2013 off. There will be two options, first we will hike around the base of the Mountain (~4 miles, with little elevation gain), and end up close to the cars, people may then choose if they would like to hike to the top of Tortugas to enjoy the view.
I am starting the hike later for those who need a little more time to sleep in. We will meet at the Sunset Parking lot across from Centennial High School.
Distance: ~4 miles or ~7 miles.
Duration: ~2-4 hours. The pace will not be too fast, and the group will take short breaks as necessary.
Elevation gain: Dependent on choice either ~100 ft or ~1000ft.
Terrain: Fair trail with some rocky places.
Skill level: Beginner friendly for the around part, more intermediate for the up part.
Pets friendly?: Yes. Please bring a leash.
What to bring?: Water, snacks, camera, (champagne to have at the top?)
Las Cruces: 10:00 am at Tortugas Mountain's Sunset Parking lot. See map (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=32.29748&mlon=-106.70694&zoom=17&layers=M). MORE information:
