Triviz to Rio Grande stroll

The city of Las Cruces has built a walking path from Triviz Path (along Interstate 25) to the La Lorna Trail (along the Rio Grande). This Tuesday, we'll walk along this hiking path.

We did this earlier in December, and it worked well. I'd like to aim this as an exercise to keep a 4 mph pace, but in reality we didn't go much faster than 3.5 mph.

The path is a paved asphalt path, so please leave your hiking boots at home and bring your walking/running shoes instead. Your knees will thank you.

Instead of getting ice cream after, we'll get it before. We'll meet at Baskin Robbins at 5:30 pm, and head over to the Kohl's parking lot around 6:00 pm. From Kohl's, we'll hike the connector trail to the Rio Grande. It's some 10–11 mi to the river at this point along a paved trail (it is unlighted, so bring a flashlight. There's some ambient light so it is likely you do not need it.)

DISTANCE is 10 mi, out and back.

ELEVATION GAIN is negligible.

FEES: None. Of course, if you carpool, please compensate your driver for gas!

DURATION: Finish by late night, 9–10 pm.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes. Bring a muzzle (you shouldn't need be told to bring a proper leash), and if you'd like to unleash, ask others before you do so.

SKILL LEVEL is reasonably beginner friendly.

TERRAIN is a level, paved cycleway/walkway. You can walk it in the dark w/ your eyes closed!

WEATHER is mid-40s, cloudy. Please dress warmly (you can always take things off).

AFTERWARDS Nothing. We'll meet for ice cream beforehand.

MEET for carpool at:

Good times! Thanks to everyone for welcoming my dog Finna. She had a great time. I had fun too.

Due to the tightness of time, I will skip the ice cream part and go directly to Kohl's at 6:00.

May be late showing up to Baskin Robbins. My phone #, if needed: [masked]-3020. Also, while unlikely, it may rain/snow (20% chance after 6 pm), so please dress appropriately!

My name is Robert Brink. I am not a member of the group. I am with a group or two here in Cruces. I am somewhat new to Cruces. In the past I have messed around in the Cruces Organs. Just wondering out loud. > Is there a way up to the top of the Organ Needle, like by -free climbing- ? ... or are there accessories needed. I have heard there is a way. Looking at it from a distance it seems mean. Given what it is, it probably has a degree of - "dangerousness" - ... any thoughts out there ?... I may join you guys for a hike, or excursion in the future if it's ok. I grew up in El Paso, and have climbed around in the Franklins. South Franklin Peak and I have some history. ( fall ... funny arm-radius, ribs) It was like 35 years ago. It will make you laugh. I have some climb ability left. I have made it to the top of both South and Franklin North Peaks, along with some other places in the Franklins. I will check in with you guys later. Would appreciate a shout out. (575)[masked]

Robert, we are doing Organ Peak coming weekend, and likely the Needle the weekend after. Check back with us. Peak hike should be scheduled by Monday.

hey robert - i'm sure you will get more accurate replies than the one i'm gonna give you but there are several was to the top of the needles via trails and some scrambling climbing. our group is not primarily climbers. we are hikers. all and all the needles hike is not technical and there is very little scrambling required to get to the top. many of our members have done it - more than once. there is one section via the route most people take that some people take comfort in using a rope but it is not absolutely necessary. you should join us the next time it is on the schedule. we try to make sure everyone makes it safely up and down with no broken bones just good camaraderie. hope to see you on a hike in the future.
