New Jakarta Standard, First Implementation: Jakarta Agentic AI on Payara, Live
Details
Welcome to the JUG Oberpfalz Online Live Coding Sessions!
Our online sessions are held in English and streamed live on YouTube. The recording will be available afterwards. Join the live chat, ask questions, and follow along as we explore what the next generation of software development might look like.
This session is hosted by Johannes Rabauer with special guest Luís Neto from Azul (Payara).
Session Topic
One CDI bean, five annotations and a talk abstract. We build a conference CFP reviewer agent on Jakarta Agentic AI: a REST POST fires the @Trigger, a first @Decision drops anything that isn't an abstract, a second asks a local Ollama model for a verdict (accept, reject, or needs a demo), the @Action writes the reviewer comment and the @Outcome returns it. It all runs on the stock Payara Micro 7.2026.9 image. No API key, no cloud.
The catch: the spec is only at milestone 1, its API may still change, and Payara is the first runtime to implement it. We want to see how much of a real agent it can carry today, and where it gives way.
Luís Neto is a committer on the spec and wrote the code that put it into Payara Micro. He starts with what the spec defines and why. Then he directs the build while Johannes types, and catches the mistakes as they happen.
What we'll do
* Talk with Luís about what Jakarta Agentic AI defines, and what it leaves to plain Java
* Hear first-hand how the implementation got into Payara Micro
* Build a CFP reviewer agent as a single CDI bean: @Agent, @Trigger, two @Decision steps, @Action, @Outcome
* Run it on Payara Micro against a small local model in Ollama
* Try to get a typed verdict out of a 4B model and see where it breaks
* Answer questions from the community
