The idea behind Just Another Book Club is to read—and reread—classics and hidden gems from across countries and centuries, all connected by a shared topic. Each season, we’ll follow one central subject and see how different writers use it to explore larger themes.
The 2026–2027 season is dedicated to adultery in critically acclaimed novels from the 19th and 20th centuries—because nothing says “relaxing evening” quite like love, desire, moral dilemmas, and social judgment. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, join us for this reading adventure.

Our next meeting is dedicated to Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin — a claustrophobic novel where respectable domestic life turns out to be less peaceful than it looks.

After Madame Bovary, where romantic fantasies collide with bourgeois reality, Zola takes us into an even more suffocating world: a gloomy Parisian passage, a damp little shop, a sickly marriage, and a young woman who is calm only in appearance.

Our next meeting is dedicated to Vladimir Nabokov’s King, Queen, Knave — an ironic novel of adultery, desire, and manipulation.

A young provincial arrives in Berlin and enters the glittering world of his wealthy uncle and elegant aunt. Desire, vanity, and calculation gradually draw the three of them into a game whose rules none of them fully understands.

Written in Russian in 1928, King, Queen, Knave was Nabokov’s second novel. Nabokov himself acknowledged its playful echoes of Madame Bovary, but the novel also invites comparison with Thérèse Raquin: another adulterous triangle shaped by confinement, appetite, and conflicting fantasies of freedom.
